“Earlier this month, a German teen-ager was forcibly taken from her parents and imprisoned in a psychiatric ward. Her crime? She is being home-schooled.” Thus begins an article I have just recently read concerning the ongoing battle which has been taking place in German since… since, well, the days of Adolf Hitler – and that`s not rhetorical hyperbole, but a blunt assessment of historical fact.
Among the numerous absurd statist and totalitarian policies of Nazi Germany was an across-the-boards banning of all home-based education, and mandatory participation of children at state-run schools. Practices which continue in modern Germany to this very day, and show no sign of changing in this present Age:
“German police officers forced their way into the home of the Busekros family in the Bavarian town of Erlangen. They hauled off 16-year-old Melissa, the eldest of the six Busekros children, to a psychiatric ward in nearby Nuremberg. Last week, a court affirmed that Melissa has to remain in the Child Psychiatry Unit because she is suffering from “school phobia.”
It almost seems like something out of a dystopic novel, complete with government officials storming private residences in the name of an all-sovereign state.
Of course, such preposterously unethical events seem wholly implausible in this country… right?
